Huawei’s Journey of Innovation and Intellectual Property in 2024: A Reflection on Vision and Resilience
Huawei’s Journey of Innovation and Intellectual Property in 2024: A Reflection on Vision and Resilience
This year, I tuned into the livestream of the Intellectual Property Forum 2025 on November 11th, and I have to say, it really got me thinking. As someone who's always curious about what the future holds and tends to spend less time looking back, I found that this event offered me a lot of valuable insights—especially about Huawei’s story, which I find truly inspiring. While jotting down notes during the live session, I realized I had written quite a lot about Huawei's advancements, so I decided to put together a more thoughtful reflection to share.
Huawei isn’t just a regular tech company. In a world where many brands chase market share or quick profits, Huawei stands out because of its long-term vision, resilience, and an unwavering passion for innovation. Especially in 2024, Huawei remains a symbol of determination and strategic foresight. More than just a business, Huawei embodies a philosophy—one that believes technology should serve society, promote cooperation, and help us build a smarter, more connected world.
Marco Alemán, Assistant Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), noted that "Huawei is a leading global user of WIPO's Global IP Services and a strong driver of innovation. Huawei had 6,600 published Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications in 2024, and has been the top user of the PCT system since 2014."
Behind all the impressive numbers and strategic moves lies something deeper—an ongoing commitment to research and development (R&D), intellectual property (IP), and genuine global collaboration. Huawei’s story is really about a long-term vision for meaningful progress, not just making money.

Innovation: From Numbers to Real Impact
In 2024, Huawei made headlines by declaring it had filed around 37,000 patents. In 2024 alone, Huawei earned around US$630 million from patent licensing. That’s a huge number, but what really struck me is what it represents: a relentless focus on pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. Whether it’s 5G, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, or cloud computing, Huawei keeps innovating with curiosity and courage.
Etienne Sanz de Acedo, CEO of the International Trademark Association, emphasized, "As an intangible asset, IP is a universal language that translates innovation and creativity into quantifiable value." Patents are more than just legal protections—they’re like footprints that show where the company has been and where it’s headed. For Huawei, a large number of patent filings signals a deep investment in inventing new technologies that can shape our future. These patents aren’t just about guarding what’s already theirs; they’re about laying the groundwork for future industries, setting standards, and encouraging a culture of creativity that crosses borders and markets.
What does this all mean? Simply put, Huawei understands that innovation isn’t a quick fix—it’s a continuous journey. They aim to create an ecosystem where ideas lead to inventions that benefit everyone: companies, governments, and individuals alike.
Innovation Is in Their DNA
Huawei’s culture is centered around two main drivers: science & technology and their customers’ needs. They invest more than 10% of their annual revenue into R&D, sometimes even reaching 20%. In 2024, that investment totaled around CNY179.7 billion—about a fifth of their revenue. Over the past ten years, the company’s R&D spending has topped CNY1.249 trillion, which is incredible. Huawei has been ranked as the sixth-largest R&D investor in the world for eight straight years, according to the EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard.
From applying for their first patent back in 1995 to now having thousands across China, the U.S., and Europe, Huawei’s innovation journey has been rapid and relentless. By 2008, their patent applications under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) reached 1,737—making them the top in the world at that time. They’ve also gained recognition through awards like the “Top Ten Inventions,” which identify breakthroughs that could revolutionize industries and generate enormous business value.
Sharing Knowledge and Building a Global Community
Huawei also believes in openness—sharing ideas and collaborating with the industry to move forward faster. They’ve contributed over 140,000 technical proposals to standardization organizations worldwide, and they actively support open-source projects like openEuler and OpenHarmony, which have millions of installations and hundreds of thousands of developers involved. These open initiatives help foster a rich ecosystem for software and technological innovation on a global scale.
Respecting and Protecting IP
A big part of Huawei’s success is their respect for intellectual property—both in honoring others’ rights and fiercely protecting their own. They hold over 150,000 active patents, including more than 50,000 in China, 29,000 in the U.S., and 19,000 in Europe. They’ve signed numerous cross-licensing agreements with giants like Nokia, Ericsson, Samsung, and Amazon, facilitating fair and balanced sharing of technology.
Resilience and Growing Despite Challenges
Year after year, Huawei has shown resilience despite geopolitical upheavals and restrictions. They’ve managed to maintain a robust patent portfolio and significant R&D investments, proving that their spirit of innovation is resilient. Their approach demonstrates that long-term commitment, strong investments, and a collaborative mindset can help navigate even the toughest challenges.
Looking ahead, Huawei’s focus on open standards, global cooperation, and technological innovation will likely keep it at the forefront of the tech world. Their efforts are driven by a simple but profound belief: technology should serve society, bridge gaps, and create shared prosperity.
Huawei’s journey in 2024 isn’t just about business success—it’s about building a future rooted in innovation, resilience, and shared progress. Their unwavering commitment to R&D, open standards, and IP respect underscores a broader vision: a connected, intelligent, and sustainable world. Amid global uncertainties, Huawei continues to demonstrate that perseverance, purpose, and innovation are the keys to long-term success.
This story isn’t just inspiring for the tech industry; it’s a reminder that the most meaningful progress comes from staying true to your values, investing in the future, and collaborating openly with others. Huawei’s path, driven by a deep sense of responsibility and a clear vision, exemplifies what it truly means to innovate with purpose.
