Who Will Turkey Side With?

Developments in recent years indicate that the US has increasingly embraced unilateralism in its foreign policy, which is commanded and shaped by the lobbies. The US government seems to be pursuing the interests of those who finance those in power rather than the interests of the public. That is why the US approach to global issues has become impertinent of late, lacking diplomatic grace, and disrupting even the already well-functioning systems.

The United States does not intervene directly in Russia, North Korea, or its arch-enemy Iran. People die, get injured, and billions of dollars of damage occur due to its indirect interventions in world affairs. However, when its plan to stir up the Middle East will raise oil prices, it will certainly not be good for the US citizens. The country has already tapped its emergency crude oil in its Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which might push oil prices towards $100, even $150 a barrel. This means inflation will remain high. Borrowings will increase and the dominance of the dollar will decline. We may even see crypto make a comeback.

The truth is that the United States has lost strength since the last Bush administration. The situation worsened with Obama, increasingly headed towards its worst with Trump and then Biden. The current state of the US also destroys people’s faith in democracy. The fact that the United States, which describes its democratic leadership status as an inherited trait in its National Security Strategy disrespects human rights outside its own borders naturally worries other countries in the world.

Today, people want to learn about more and even support the countries that were once called “villains” as the hypocrisy of the others that dominate the popular culture is unveiled. The visa and customs practices, which were made increasingly difficult after the September 11 attacks, created an interest in the East and the South, rather than the West. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization has created a rival for itself, called the Global South.

Gradually, the Global South has become more powerful, and appealing to the world. I think it is rather a weak attempt to kill this growing interest by stirring up the Middle East.
